The New York Yankees have made another significant move this offseason, adding veteran first baseman Paul Goldschmidt to their roster on a one-year, $12.5 million deal, as reported by multiple sources.
Goldschmidt, who was named the NL MVP in 2022, has been a standout player for the St. Louis Cardinals over the past six seasons. Prior to his time with the Cardinals, he played for the Arizona Diamondbacks for eight seasons, establishing himself as a reliable starter early in his career.
As a seven-time All-Star, Goldschmidt brings a wealth of experience and talent to the Yankees lineup as they look to bounce back from the loss of Juan Soto to the Mets. Known for his prowess both at the plate and in the field, Goldschmidt has earned four Gold Gloves (2013, 2015, 2017, 2021) and five Silver Sluggers (2013, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2022) throughout his impressive 14-year career.
At 37 years old, Goldschmidt wrapped up last season with 22 home runs and a .245 batting average, showcasing his continued ability to make an impact on the field.
This signing marks the second former MVP to join the Yankees in recent days, following the acquisition of 2019 NL MVP Cody Bellinger from the Chicago Cubs. In addition to these moves, the Yankees have been active in bolstering their roster by trading for closer Devin Williams and reliever Fernando Cruz, as well as signing All-Star starting pitcher Max Fried.
