Just one month ago, Rory McIlroy and Bryson DeChambeau delivered an unforgettable U.S. Open showdown, but today at Royal Troon, they struggled and find themselves far from the top of the leaderboard. Despite their early setbacks, both players have the talent to bounce back, as they have proven in the past. However, they will need to put in a lot of work to get back into contention.
McIlroy carded a 7-over 78, while DeChambeau fared slightly better at 5-over.
“You have a game plan going into the tournament, but when you face unfamiliar conditions like strong winds, it can throw you off,” McIlroy explained. “Today, I just couldn’t adjust well to the challenging conditions.”
DeChambeau added, “I haven’t had much experience playing in the rain. It’s a tough test out here, and not something I’m used to. However, I did finish eighth at St Andrews, so I know I can perform well in different conditions.”
DeChambeau, the victor of their previous duel, got off to a rocky start at Royal Troon with early bogeys. Despite a tough front nine, he managed to recover on the back nine, finishing with an eagle on the 16th hole for a 76, eight shots off the lead.
Meanwhile, McIlroy struggled around the turn, facing a series of bogeys and double bogeys. He finished the day at 7-over, a significant 10 strokes behind the leaders.
Both players acknowledged the challenging conditions, with rain and strong winds affecting the entire field. Justin Thomas managed to shoot a 3-under round, but most players found the conditions to be extremely difficult.
McIlroy and DeChambeau, considered favorites for the tournament, will now need to focus on making the cut and salvaging their chances for the weekend.
“My only goal now is to concentrate on tomorrow and make the cut,” McIlroy stated.
DeChambeau expressed his frustration, saying, “It’s disappointing, but that’s golf. I’ll regroup and come back stronger.”
