Daniel Brown emerged as a surprise contender on Thursday afternoon at Royal Troon.
The 29-year-old Englishman, making his major championship debut, currently holds the lead at the British Open.
Brown carded a flawless 65 at Royal Troon in Scotland, edging past Shane Lowry to secure a one-shot advantage at the start of the final major of the season. Ranked 273rd in the world prior to the tournament, Brown now stands as the highest-ranked player to lead a major after the first round since Andrew Landry at the 2016 U.S. Open.
Additionally, Brown becomes the first player in the last 30 years to shoot a bogey-free round of 65 or better in his maiden major appearance.
Reflecting on his performance, Brown said, “It’s an incredible feeling. I never expected this, but there’s still a long way to go. I’m focused on staying composed for tomorrow.”
Although Lowry seemed poised to finish the day in the lead, Brown quietly closed the gap. With consecutive birdies at the turn, including a remarkable putt that briefly tied him with Lowry, Brown ultimately surged ahead with birdies on two of his final three holes.
Having only made two PGA Tour starts, Brown’s recent success includes a cut made at the Genesis Scottish Open last week and a victory at the ISPS Handa World Invitational last fall. He has shown promise with two top-10 finishes on the DP World Tour this season.
However, Thursday proved challenging for several notable players, including Tiger Woods, who struggled with an 8-over 79. Rory McIlroy and Bryson DeChambeau also faced difficulties, with DeChambeau shooting a 5-over 76 and McIlroy opening with a 7-over 78.
As the tournament progresses, Brown finds himself in a historic position to potentially claim victory at the British Open. While it’s early days, the focus remains on maintaining momentum in the upcoming rounds.
Looking ahead, Brown emphasized the importance of rest and preparation, stating, “Eating well and getting enough rest is crucial. I’ll need to be ready to perform again tomorrow.”
