MLB revealed the top three contenders for its season-end accolades on Monday, as determined by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America (BBWAA). The AL finalists are voted on by writers in American League cities, while the NL finalists are chosen through National League balloting. Each award garners 30 votes.
Unsurprisingly, Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Dodgers is in the running for NL MVP after his historic 50-50 season, where he smashed 54 home runs and swiped 59 bases, a first in baseball history.
New York Yankees’ Aaron Judge and Juan Soto are both vying for the AL MVP title. Will their presence split the votes among the electorate?
The AL Cy Young finalist list holds a surprising inclusion with Seth Lugo making the cut over his Kansas City Royals teammate Cole Ragans and Baltimore Orioles’ Corbin Burnes. Relievers usually don’t clinch this award, but Emmanuel Clase’s stellar season with a 0.61 ERA and 47 saves makes him a deserving finalist.
