First baseman Pete Alonso has signed a two-year, $54 million contract with the New York Mets, including a $10 million signing bonus and an opt-out option after the first year.

Alonso expressed his desire to remain with the Mets long-term, but a combination of factors limited his market value, leading to the shorter deal. Despite a less productive 2024 season, the Mets were able to secure Alonso’s return to Queens.

The Mets’ offseason has been highlighted by the addition of Alonso along with other key signings, including Juan Soto, Jesse Winker, and Jose Siri. The team has also bolstered its pitching staff with acquisitions such as Sean Manaea, Clay Holmes, Frankie Montas, and Griffin Canning.

With Alonso back in the lineup, the Mets look to build on their successful 2024 season, where they reached the NLCS. The team is optimistic about their chances in the upcoming season, aiming to compete at the highest level.
