NBA All-Star Game viewership down 13% amid latest format change, criticism

Fans Unimpressed with NBA All-Star Game as Viewership Drops

Viewership of this year’s NBA All-Star Game took a hit, with just over 4.7 million people tuning in across TNT, TBS, and TruTV. This marked a 13% decrease from the previous year’s numbers, where nearly 5.4 million viewers watched the game.

This year’s All-Star Game now ranks as the second-lowest in viewership in the last 25 years, with the 2023 game drawing about 4.6 million viewers. The highest-rated game during this period was in 2002, which saw over 13 million viewers tuning in.

The NBA tried a new format this year, featuring four teams in a mini tournament at the Chase Center in San Francisco. The aim was to promote competition rather than a lackluster game. However, the changes did not seem to have the desired impact, with critics like Draymond Green voicing their discontent.

With suggestions for further format changes circulating, such as a potential international-domestic battle, it is evident that the league still has work to do in refining the All-Star Game experience. The recent decline in viewership only emphasizes the need for improvement.
