Earlier this week, Boston Red Sox third baseman Rafael Devers raised eyebrows when he declined the team’s request to accommodate new free-agent signing Alex Bregman by moving from third base to designated hitter. Devers stated, “I told them no. I’m a third baseman.” The Red Sox have yet to clarify how they will utilize Devers and Bregman once the season begins on March 27 against the Texas Rangers. However, Bregman has expressed his willingness to play any position to help his new team succeed.
“I think everybody here believes in their abilities,” Bregman told MLB.com. “I think all of us believe that if we put together a good effort this season, we have a really good chance of being a winning baseball team. For me, I’ll play wherever it helps the team win.”
Bregman, known for his strong defense, has not played any position other than third base since 2019.

Although Bregman could potentially transition to second base given his athleticism, the Red Sox also have Kristian Campbell, one of the top second base prospects in the game. The team is encouraged to have Campbell start in the majors at the beginning of the season to potentially gain draft-pick compensation if he excels individually.
Having an abundance of talented players is a good problem to have. The Red Sox may find a solution that allows them to utilize Devers, Bregman, and Campbell simultaneously without any issues. However, navigating through current challenges may be necessary to reach that point.
