San Diego FC stuns LA Galaxy in first MLS game, defeating defending champs with 2-0 away win

San Diego FC has kicked off its first season in Major League Soccer with a bang. The team secured a remarkable 2-0 victory over the Los Angeles Galaxy in their inaugural match on Sunday. Midfielder Anders Dreyer made history by scoring the first two goals for the franchise, shocking the reigning MLS champions on their home turf.

Dreyer’s first goal came in the 52nd minute, as he skillfully found the back of the net off a pass from Hirving “Chucky” Lozano, leaving Galaxy keeper Novak Mićović helpless. San Diego capitalized on L.A.’s errors to seize the historic moment, taking advantage of a poor pass from the backline.

Despite several close calls, San Diego maintained their lead with solid goalkeeping from CJ dos Santos, thwarting the Galaxy’s attempts to equalize. In the dying moments of the game, a swift counterattack led to Dreyer’s second goal, cementing the victory and etching his name in the record books.

The away win was particularly impressive considering the Galaxy’s formidable record at Dignity Health Sports Park. Even without key players like Riqui Puig and Joseph Paintsil, the surging Galaxy were expected to dominate, yet San Diego’s cohesion and skill outshined the hosts.

As a new team in the league, expectations were modest for San Diego. However, their strong performance showcased their potential and ability to compete at a high level. Next up for San Diego FC is their first home game against St. Louis SC, providing another opportunity to make a statement in their debut season.
