6 MLB position changes to watch this spring: Jazz Chisholm Jr., Jose Altuve, Mike Trout set to appear somewhere new in 2025

Watching players switch positions is always intriguing in MLB spring training, and this season is no exception. There are several notable changes to keep an eye on, whether it’s due to declining defense, injury prevention, team changes, or a player’s versatility. Here are six position changes to watch this spring:

1. Jose Altuve: 2B to LF
The Astros are moving Altuve from second base to left field, a significant shift for the former Gold Glove winner. Altuve’s defensive skills have declined in recent years, making this move necessary. It will be interesting to see how he adjusts to his new position, especially with concerns about his arm strength.

2. Mike Trout: CF to RF
The Angels are shifting Trout from center field to right field to prioritize his health and minimize wear and tear. Trout is more than capable of excelling in right field, and working with Torii Hunter should help with the transition. It remains to be seen if this change will indeed keep Trout healthy.

3. Alex Bregman: 3B to 2B (maybe?)
Bregman, now with the Red Sox, is reportedly preparing for a move to second base, despite his success at third base. This change could improve Boston’s defense, but it also raises questions about incumbent third baseman Rafael Devers’s future. How the Red Sox manage this situation will be worth following.

4. Mookie Betts: part-time SS to full-time SS
Betts is transitioning to full-time shortstop for the Dodgers after playing half a season there in 2024. With a full spring training to prepare, Betts has the opportunity to excel at his new position. His athleticism and work ethic suggest he will thrive as a shortstop.

5. Jazz Chisholm Jr.: 3B to 2B
Chisholm Jr. has experience playing second base, unlike some of the other players on this list. His move to second base in 2025 will be a continuation of his defensive versatility.

These position changes add an extra layer of excitement to the upcoming MLB season, as fans eagerly await to see how these players adapt to their new roles on the field. During his time with the Marlins, Chisholm transitioned from a shortstop to a full-time center fielder before moving to third base with the Yankees. Despite some defensive struggles, Chisholm showed promise at third base, but with Gleyber Torres leaving the infield, he will now return to his natural position at second base where he has excelled in the past.

Jonathan India, known for his offensive prowess, struggled defensively in Cincinnati, leading to a move to left field with the Royals. This change will test his adaptability in one of the largest outfields in baseball as he looks to find his footing in his new role. It remains to be seen how quickly he can adjust to this new position.
