Israeli fighter Ilay Barzilay still hopes to face Bryce Mitchell after grappling match cancelled: ‘It’s personal’

Ilay Barzilay had no gimmicks surrounding his grappling match against Bryce Mitchell, which was originally scheduled for Karate Combat 53 but later canceled.

Hailing from Israel, the 23-year-old prospect eagerly accepted the opportunity to face Mitchell after the UFC featherweight made controversial comments on his podcast defending Adolf Hitler and denying the Holocaust. UFC CEO Dana White condemned Mitchell’s remarks as “beyond disgusting” and “the dumbest and most ignorant” he had ever heard.

Barzilay took to Instagram to criticize Mitchell for his comments, catching Karate Combat’s attention. However, their grappling match fell through when Mitchell booked a bout against Jean Silva at UFC 314 in Miami in April.

Reflecting on the missed opportunity, Barzilay expressed disappointment and frustration, having trained intensively for the showdown. He was determined to defeat Mitchell and prove a point.

Although Mitchell’s offensive comments were not unprecedented, Barzilay viewed this as a chance to hold him accountable.

For Barzilay, Mitchell’s words struck a personal chord due to his family’s connection to the Holocaust, making him even more determined to seek retribution.

Barzilay, whose grandmother is a Holocaust survivor, found Mitchell’s remarks deeply hurtful and took them personally.

Despite Mitchell backing out of their match, Barzilay remains hopeful that Silva, his training partner, will avenge the situation. Barzilay trains with Silva at the Fighting Nerds team in Brazil.

While Barzilay believes Mitchell could have faced him in the grappling match before his UFC fight, he trusts in Silva’s abilities to deliver justice.

Barzilay is confident that Silva, a skilled fighter, will triumph over Mitchell, possibly propelling him to the top 15 rankings.

Speculating on Mitchell’s motives for withdrawing from the match, Barzilay suggests possible concerns about rule violations or physical altercations.

With an impeccable 6-0 record in the LFA, Barzilay anticipates joining his Fighting Nerds teammates in the UFC soon.

Above all, Barzilay desires to face Mitchell in the future to settle the score and prove his mettle.

Eager for a showdown, Barzilay is determined to confront Mitchell, emphasizing the personal nature of their conflict.

For Barzilay, the potential UFC debut against Mitchell holds significant personal meaning, as it represents a chance to defend his family’s legacy.
