Nuno Espirito Santo, the manager of Nottingham Forest, expressed his love for the FA Cup after his team advanced to the quarter-finals with a thrilling penalty shootout victory over Ipswich at the City Ground.
Despite Forest legend Brian Clough’s inability to secure the trophy during his tenure, Nuno remains optimistic about their chances, with their last FA Cup triumph dating back 66 years.
Ryan Yates’ crucial header forced a 1-1 draw that led to the shootout, where goalkeeper Matz Sels emerged as the hero by saving Jack Taylor’s decisive spot-kick.
Speaking to ITV, Nuno remarked: “The players performed admirably, and we competed well throughout the match.
“Although the first half was lackluster for both teams, I am pleased with the team’s achievement, and our fans are elated tonight.
“Moving forward, our focus shifts to the FA Cup after facing Manchester City in the league. It’s a competition that holds a special place in our hearts, and we will give it our all.”
‘A few games and you’re in the final’
Goalkeeper Sels, who made the crucial save in the shootout, expressed his delight at helping the team progress and looks forward to what lies ahead.
He stated: “I’m pleased that I could contribute to the team’s advancement to the next round. It was the only penalty where I guessed the right direction. I had studied the penalties before the game, and I made the right call. I am thrilled for the team.
“Despite the challenging match, extra time is always a risk, and penalties can be unpredictable. In such situations, one of the goalkeepers inevitably becomes the hero. I am excited and eager for the upcoming weekend.
“We are prepared for what lies ahead. The FA Cup is a fantastic competition where a few victories can lead you all the way to the final.”
