A potential heavyweight unification bout between UFC champion Jon Jones and interim champ Tom Aspinall continues to be one of the most anticipated matchups in MMA in 2025. Progress towards making this fight a reality has been slow since Jones’ victory over Stipe Miocic last November.
Jones, 37, secured a third-round knockout against the former two-time champion at UFC 309, while Aspinall, 31, has been patiently waiting for his shot at Jones. Despite initial excitement from UFC CEO Dana White about the matchup, recent reports suggest that the likelihood of the fight happening is decreasing within Team Aspinall.
However, in a recent interview on ESPN’s “First Take,” White expressed optimism, hinting that Jones may return to the octagon “this summer.” Jones’ manager, Malki Kawa, addressed these comments on a podcast, hinting that negotiations are ongoing and the fight’s possibility depends on certain factors.
Following his win over Miocic, Jones made it clear that significant financial incentives would be required to entice him to face Aspinall. Despite Aspinall’s eagerness for the fight and the UFC’s support for the matchup, Jones’ financial demands appear to be the main obstacle.
Aspinall, in a statement on his YouTube channel, emphasized that the ball is in Jones’ court regarding the potential fight. He reiterated his willingness to face any heavyweight for the undisputed title but highlighted that Jones’ financial comfort is crucial for the bout to materialize.
Since winning the interim title in 2023, Aspinall has only fought once, successfully defending his belt with a quick knockout in July 2024. The MMA world eagerly awaits further developments in the potential showdown between Jones and Aspinall.
