Arsenal head coach Renee Slegers has commended the impressive form of young midfielder Kyra Cooney-Cross ahead of the team’s Women’s FA Cup clash with Liverpool on Sunday.

Cooney-Cross, who recently won Arsenal’s Player of the Month award for January, played a pivotal role in the Gunners’ stunning 4-3 comeback victory against West Ham United last weekend.

“I believe the role she fulfills for Arsenal is quite multifaceted,” Slegers explained. “We have high expectations on players, both in and out of possession. Her development, particularly in defensive aspects, has been significant, and it’s a testament to her adaptation to our playing style.”

Despite initially being a backup player following her arrival at Arsenal in 2023, Cooney-Cross’s perseverance and dedication have impressed Slegers. The coach expressed her satisfaction with the midfielder’s work ethic and patience.

“I’m delighted with Kyra’s determination and willingness to keep improving, which she has demonstrated consistently. She has seized the opportunities presented to her and performed admirably,” Slegers added.

While Cooney-Cross has been excelling in midfield, Arsenal has seen a surge in form from several players across the squad.

“When the team performs well collectively, individual players can shine,” Slegers noted. “Our strength lies in the contributions from various squad members, indicating our strength as a team. We embrace diversity in our gameplay, which enhances our unpredictability.”

Arsenal’s focus now shifts to the FA Cup quarter-final encounter with Liverpool. The Gunners, with a rich history in the competition, aim to claim their 15th title, having last triumphed in 2016.

“It’s essential for us to understand our position. The players are aware of the historical significance of the FA Cup and our desire to win the 15th title. This serves as a motivating factor for us,” Slegers emphasized.

“However, mere intentions are insufficient. It is our daily actions, commitment on and off the field, that will determine our chances of winning trophies,” she added.
