The Rays received positive news about left-hander Shane McClanahan the day after he exited his final spring training start due to injury. However, he will not be available for Opening Day as imaging revealed an inflamed nerve in his left triceps. Despite starting the season on the injured list, the team remains optimistic about his recovery.

Manager Kevin Cash shared, “Really good news on Mac. Basically, it was more nerve-related. Calm the nerve down and then see how he progresses, get a ball back in his hand. Probably the best news we could have heard.”

Although there is no definite timeline for his return, Cash described the development as “very fortunate.”

Ryan Pepiot will now take the mound on Opening Day in McClanahan’s absence. Despite the setback, the team is encouraged by the positive update on McClanahan’s condition.

McClanahan, who missed the entire 2024 season due to Tommy John surgery, experienced discomfort on Saturday while pitching. The upcoming season was supposed to mark his return to MLB action after his surgery in 2023.

Before his injury, McClanahan was a two-time All-Star with impressive statistics. In 2023, he posted an 11-2 record with a 3.29 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, and 121 strikeouts in 115 innings. Throughout his career, he has maintained a 33-16 record with a 3.02 ERA (130 ERA+). His performance in spring training indicated a strong comeback for the upcoming season.

The Rays finished the previous season with an 80-82 record, landing them in fourth place in the AL East. It was their worst season since 2017.
