UFC Vegas 105: For Lerone Murphy, making a little noise could expedite his title chances

The importance of being a loud voice in the fight game cannot be understated. Sean O’Malley, known as “Suga” Sean, is a natural promoter who has captured the attention of MMA fans. Despite his critics, he doesn’t need to justify his rematch with Merab Dvalishvili. O’Malley has made significant changes in his life, including giving up smoking weed and gaming, to show his dedication to the sport.

On the other hand, Lerone Murphy, an undefeated English fighter, has not received the same level of attention despite his impressive record in the UFC. The problem may lie in his reserved nature, as fighters who make noise tend to garner more support from fans and the promotion. Murphy’s unique story of surviving being shot in the face adds to his marketability, but he prefers to focus on his upcoming opponent, Josh Emmett.

Despite his success, Murphy still lacks control over his fight locations and opponents. He is set to face Emmett at the Apex, far from his home in the UK, due to Emmett’s preferences as the higher-ranked and more experienced fighter. A win over Emmett could propel Murphy higher in the featherweight rankings, showcasing his potential for future title contention.

The lone appearance at the Apex for Lerone Murphy was in his bout against Edson Barboza last May. The five-round fight not only provided him with valuable experience but also earned him the Fight of the Night bonus with a decision victory.

With Topuria moving up to lightweight, Murphy faces tough competition in the featherweight division, including the likes of Max Holloway, Brian Ortega, and Rodriguez. While a win over Emmett may not guarantee a title shot, it could certainly propel Murphy closer to contender status.

“I truly believe that the featherweight division is the best in the world right now,” Murphy expresses. “With fighters like Patricio Pitbull and Yair, it’s incredibly competitive. Every fight in this division could headline a pay-per-view card, and I’m thrilled to be a part of it.”

In a stacked division like featherweight, standing out can be a challenge. Murphy’s callout of Emmett after his victory over Ige is a prime example of how being vocal can lead to desired matchups. If he emerges victorious against Emmett, will Murphy have another name in mind for his next challenge?

“My coach actually suggested the fight with Josh Emmett, and I immediately agreed. However, I don’t plan too far ahead. I focus on the present moment and whoever the UFC puts in front of me, I’m ready to fight,” Murphy explains.

If Murphy secures a win against Emmett, his coach may need to have another big name ready for him to call out in the post-fight interview.
