Atlanta Braves pitcher Reynaldo López is set to undergo arthroscopic surgery on his throwing shoulder to assess any potential structural damage, per MLB’s Mark Bowman. The right-hander was placed on the injured list with shoulder inflammation and is expected to be sidelined for several months.
Braves manager Brian Snitker revealed, “López threw a side session that went well, but he requested further evaluation on his shoulder afterwards. It appears there is inflammation present, and we are awaiting the results of the examination.”
In 2024, López had a standout season after transitioning from relief to starting pitching with the Braves. He posted a remarkable 1.99 ERA in 26 appearances, earning his first All-Star selection and finishing 11th in the NL Cy Young Award voting.
López’s absence comes after just one start in 2025, where he allowed three runs in five innings against the San Diego Padres. Bryce Elder has since taken over his spot in the rotation.
Unfortunately, López’s injury adds to the challenges facing the Braves, who have started the season with a 0-5 record. The team is dealing with multiple key players on the injured list, including ace Spencer Strider, outfielder Ronald Acuna Jr., and catcher Sean Murphy. In addition, Jurickson Profar, who recently joined the team as a free agent, received an 80-game suspension for a positive drug test.
Even if the Braves can overcome their early struggles and injuries, Profar will be ineligible for postseason play due to the suspension.
