Michael Chandler reflects on the challenges of being labeled a cheater in the UFC, but remains true to himself despite the criticism.
Chandler is gearing up for a high-stakes matchup against Paddy Pimblett at UFC 314 in Miami this weekend. The former Bellator champion has faced accusations of cheating after his recent losses to Dustin Poirier and Charles Oliveira.
As he prepares for the upcoming fight, Chandler addresses the cheating allegations head-on.
“The narrative is tough to deal with,” Chandler admits. “People may have their suspicions, but I know who I am at my core. I strive to do things with honor and respect, despite the negative perceptions.”
Chandler’s UFC record stands at 2-4, with five bonus wins under his belt. He is determined to secure his first victory in nearly three years.
In his last fight against Oliveira, Chandler faced criticism for questionable tactics, including shots to the back of Oliveira’s head. Despite the controversy, Chandler remains steadfast in his integrity.
“In the heat of the moment, things happen in a fight,” Chandler explains. “It’s all part of the sport. I would never accuse my opponents of cheating, as these actions often occur instinctively during intense competition.”
Leading up to the fight, Pimblett and other fighters weighed in on the cheating accusations, highlighting the importance of fair play in the octagon.
Chandler appreciates Pimblett’s lighthearted approach to the situation, noting that not all fighters share the same perspective.
“I respect Paddy for his attitude,” Chandler remarks. “It’s important to focus on the fight at hand rather than getting caught up in negativity.”
Despite the criticism, Chandler remains focused on his performance in the octagon and trusts the referees to enforce the rules effectively.
“Fans may not always agree with my actions, but I am committed to competing with integrity,” Chandler asserts. “I will continue to approach each fight with the same level of determination and sportsmanship.”
With his upcoming bouts on the horizon, Chandler remains resilient in the face of adversity and looks forward to proving his critics wrong.
