Ángel Cabrera has made a remarkable comeback after nearly 4,000 days and a stint in an Argentine prison. He emerged victorious in a PGA Tour-sanctioned event by posting a 1-under 71 to win the James Hardie Pro Football Hall of Fame Invitational in Boca Raton, Florida. This win on the PGA Tour Champions is Cabrera’s first in almost 11 years.
Throughout his career, Cabrera had three wins on the PGA Tour, including the 2007 U.S. Open and the Masters in 2009. His last victory was at The Greenbrier Classic in 2014.
However, his career took a dark turn after facing allegations of domestic violence from former girlfriends. After serving time in prison in Brazil and Argentina, Cabrera was released on parole in August 2023 and was allowed to return to PGA Tour-sanctioned events.
Reflecting on his past actions, Cabrera expressed remorse for his behavior and the impact it had on those closest to him. He acknowledged the mistakes he made and the hurt he caused, especially to his loved ones and the golf community.
Now 55, Cabrera has competed in 26 events on the Tour’s senior circuit and recently earned full status on the PGA Tour Champions through 2026. His next stop is Augusta National for the Masters, where he will compete for the first time since 2019.
Despite his struggles at the Masters in recent years, Cabrera’s recent win has boosted his confidence as he prepares to return to Augusta on a positive note after more than a decade.
