Aaron Pico recently confirmed that he was in discussions to face top featherweight contender Movsar Evloev in his highly anticipated UFC debut. After successfully campaigning for a release from the PFL, Pico’s dream of joining the UFC finally came true. Rumors had linked Pico to a headlining matchup against Evloev at UFC Fight Night 256 on May 17 at The UFC Apex, a fight that both fighters seemed interested in.
Pico (13-4 MMA, 0-0 UFC) spoke about the potential matchup, stating, “Yeah, it was real. I got a call from Ali Abdelaziz asking if I could fight on May 17. I immediately agreed, not knowing my opponent at first. When I found out it was Movsar, I was excited. I believe it would have been a great fight for me, showcasing my wrestling skills. Unfortunately, the fight didn’t come to fruition, but it was close.”
Pico’s Understanding of Evloev’s Decision
Despite the fight falling through, Pico expressed understanding for Evloev’s decision. “I was a bit surprised, but I get it. He’s ranked No. 4, and I’m a newcomer. It must have been a tough decision for him, but I respect his choice. He initially agreed, but I’m sure his team advised him differently,” Pico shared.
Pico’s New Targets in the Featherweight Division
With the Evloev fight off the table, Pico has set his sights on two other top featherweight contenders for his UFC debut. “Instead of Movsar, I’m now looking at fighters like Aljamain Sterling and Brian Ortega. Let’s make those fights happen. That’s how you make a name for yourself in this sport,” Pico stated. Ortega is ranked No. 6 in the UFC rankings, while Sterling holds the No. 9 spot in the featherweight division.
