Longtime MMA manager details GFL chaos, says promotion is ‘asking fighters to compete for free’

Global Fight League (GFL) is facing backlash for failing to fulfill its commitments to fighters following the abrupt cancellation of its inaugural events. Longtime MMA manager Lloyd Pierson, representing multiple fighters signed with GFL, accused the organization of causing financial harm by not delivering on promised payments.

Pierson highlighted that GFL initially garnered attention in the MMA scene by offering substantial financial rewards to fighters. However, as events were canceled and funding issues arose, fighters found themselves in a precarious position after relying on these promises. This led to financial strain and disrupted fight camp preparations for bouts that were ultimately canceled.

The situation escalated when GFL CEO Darren Owen failed to provide proof of funds to reassure fighters about the organization’s financial stability. Despite circulating documents showing a healthy bank balance, the funds were swiftly withdrawn, leaving fighters without their guaranteed monthly stipends.

Owen’s attempt to shift fighters to a revenue-sharing model instead of their contracted pay further exacerbated the situation. This move was met with skepticism from fighters and industry insiders, with former UFC fighter Alan Belcher even labeling GFL as a potential scam.

As uncertainty looms over GFL’s future events and funding sources, fighters are left in limbo, unsure of their next steps. The lack of transparency and sudden changes in event dates have raised concerns among fighters and their representatives, urging them to stand together against unfair treatment by promoters.

In conclusion, the GFL’s credibility is called into question as fighters demand fair compensation and genuine funding assurances before committing to future events. The MMA community must unite to protect the interests of professional athletes and prevent predatory practices in the industry.
