Suns owner Mat Ishbia expects Stephen A. Smith to apologize for calling him one of the worst owners in NBA history

The relationship between Phoenix Suns owner Mat Ishbia and ESPN analyst Stephen A. Smith has hit a rough patch. Ishbia expressed his displeasure with Smith’s comments, where he was labeled as potentially the worst owner in basketball history. Despite not taking Smith’s remarks seriously, Ishbia anticipates an apology from the analyst in the near future.

“Stephen A. Smith’s opinions don’t hold much weight for me,” Ishbia stated during the team’s end-of-season press conference. “I believe many people share the same sentiment.”

Smith criticized Ishbia on “First Take,” suggesting that he was steering the Suns towards becoming one of the worst-run teams in NBA history. However, Ishbia disagreed with the comparison to former Clippers owner Donald Sterling, emphasizing that while the Suns have faced challenges under his ownership, he is not on the same level as Sterling in terms of controversy and mismanagement.

Despite the Suns’ disappointing performance this season, missing the playoffs and undergoing coaching changes, Ishbia remains confident in his ability to lead the team. While acknowledging the team’s shortcomings, he believes that Smith’s comments were unwarranted and expects an apology for the disrespectful remarks.

“Criticism is valid when it comes to our performance on the court,” Ishbia acknowledged. “But comparing me to the likes of past disgraced owners is unjustified. I trust that Smith will retract his statements.”

Looking ahead, Ishbia is focused on improving the Suns’ standing and reputation in the league. He is optimistic that Smith will acknowledge his misstep and apologize for the unwarranted comparison.
