Mets to work Jeff McNeil out in center during rehab as New York gets creative after Jose Siri’s injury

The New York Mets Experiment with Jeff McNeil in Center Field

The New York Mets are taking a different approach to improve their center-field situation by giving Jeff McNeil, a two-time All-Star second baseman and left fielder, a start in center field. McNeil, who is currently on a rehab assignment with the club’s Florida State League affiliate, will be playing in center on Thursday to gain experience at the position, according to manager Carlos Mendoza.

While McNeil may not be seen as a permanent solution for regular center-field duties upon his return from an oblique injury, the Mets believe that giving him playing time in center field is a logical decision.

Mendoza explained, “There’s a reason why we’re doing it. He’s done it before, but we’ve also got [Luisangel] Acuña, we’ve got Tyrone [Taylor]. We just felt like while he’s down there now, why not use this opportunity to get him some exposure?”

McNeil, who has extensive experience in the corner outfield positions, has only played three games in center field at the major league level. Therefore, getting him accustomed to the nuances of the position, such as the head-on angles, will expand his versatility.

Having McNeil as an option in center field would benefit the Mets in multiple ways. With Jose Siri sidelined due to a left tibia fracture, the Mets have limited options to fill the void in center field. Tyrone Taylor, Siri’s replacement and platoon partner, has been struggling at the plate. Additionally, former center fielders Brandon Nimmo and Starling Marte have primarily played in other positions. Acuña, who played center field in Triple-A Syracuse last year, is another option for the Mets.

From a roster construction perspective, training McNeil in center field provides the Mets with added flexibility. With only a few position players having minor-league options, being able to utilize McNeil in center field, even on a part-time basis, gives Mendoza more versatility in setting his lineup.

McNeil, known for his consistent offensive performance, has a career batting line of .289/.353/.430 and has accumulated an estimated 21 Wins Above Replacement.
