Cub Swanson to coach old foe Giga Chikadze in ‘full circle’ moment

Life has a way of bringing unexpected twists, as Cub Swanson recently experienced.

Swanson, a seasoned MMA fighter with a record of 30-14 in the octagon, finds himself in Kansas City, Missouri for UFC on ESPN 66. However, this time he’s not the one stepping into the cage. With his fighting career potentially coming to a close, Swanson has shifted his focus towards managing and coaching aspiring fighters. It’s a gradual transition that has evolved as he approached the end of his competitive journey.

Surprisingly, amidst training young prospects, Swanson was approached by a familiar face – a veteran fighter who had previously defeated him in a match back in May 2021.

Despite their past encounter, Swanson and the fighter, Giga Chikadze, managed to forge a strong bond. Chikadze, with a record of 15-4, is set to face David Onama at T-Mobile Center in a featherweight bout this Saturday.

In a recent interview with MMA Junkie Radio, Swanson shared his initial surprise at Chikadze seeking his guidance despite their history. Overcoming his ego, Swanson decided to assist Chikadze in his training, making subtle adjustments to enhance his performance and fluidity in the cage. The collaboration has been fruitful, and Swanson is eager to witness Chikadze’s progress.

Reflecting on this unexpected turn of events, Swanson marvels at the cyclical nature of life. The memory of his bout with Chikadze remains vivid, especially during a challenging period following the passing of his manager. This event prompted Swanson to contemplate his post-fighting future, leading him to embrace coaching and mentorship roles.

“It’s weird how life works out,” Swanson muses, acknowledging the serendipitous connection with Chikadze and his evolving role as a coach.
