Dustin Poirier is set to face off against Max Holloway in a highly anticipated trilogy bout for the UFC’s ceremonial BMF title on July 19 at the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans, Louisiana. This will be the final fight of Poirier’s legendary career, as the Louisiana native has announced his retirement following this bout.
Poirier, with a record of 29-8, 1 NC, previously fought for the BMF title in 2023 but lost to Justin Gaethje. He has a history with Holloway, having defeated him in their two previous encounters. The first was in 2012 when Poirier won by submission, and the second was in 2019 when Poirier claimed the interim UFC lightweight title with a unanimous decision victory.
In his most recent fight, Poirier unsuccessfully challenged for the undisputed UFC lightweight title, losing to Islam Makhachev via submission. On the other hand, Holloway, with a record of 26-8, suffered a knockout loss in his last fight against Ilia Topuria while attempting to regain the UFC featherweight title.
Holloway, known for his impressive performances, had secured three consecutive victories before his recent setback, including a memorable knockout of Gaethje to win the BMF title. His knockout against Gaethje was voted as the 2024 Knockout of the Year by Uncrowned.
