Andre Agassi, a tennis legend and eight-time Grand Slam Champion, made a successful professional pickleball debut on Wednesday at the U.S. Open Pickleball in Naples, Florida. Teamed up with star Anna Leigh Waters, they secured a 2-1 victory against Tristan Dussault and Stevie Petropouleas in the mixed pro doubles event, advancing to the third round of the tournament.
In a post-win interview, Agassi humorously shared, “Coming out with Anna Leigh, I was as nervous as a gypsy with a mortgage.” Waters, the No. 1 ranked women’s pickleball player globally, proved to be the ideal partner for Agassi. She turned pro at the remarkable age of 12 and has a history of success, including winning gold in various events.
Waters praised Agassi’s aggressive playing style, which was evident during their match. The duo executed the famous “shake and bake” strategy, showcasing impeccable timing and communication. Despite a tough fight from their young opponents, Agassi and Waters managed to secure the win and will face a new challenge in the Round of 16.
The U.S. Open Pickleball tournament will continue through Saturday, with coverage airing daily on CBS Sports Network. The Round of 16 is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon, promising more thrilling matches ahead.
