The fan who fell over the 21-foot Clemente Wall at PNC Park in Pittsburgh on Wednesday night is now awake, alert, and able to speak, according to a GoFundMe page set up for 20-year-old Kavan Markwood.
Markwood’s progress was shared by Jennifer Phillips, who organized the fundraiser, stating that he is showing signs of improvement and resilience after the tragic incident.
“We are so relieved and grateful to share some encouraging news about Kavan. As of this morning, Kavan is awake, alert, and able to speak. This progress feels nothing short of miraculous after everything he’s been through since the accident. Thank you all for your prayers and support.”
“Please continue to keep him in your thoughts as he embarks on the next phase of recovery.”
The fall occurred during a game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Chicago Cubs after Andrew McCutchen’s double in the seventh inning. Another fan jumped from a lower section to assist Markwood, leading to a delay in the game as medical attention was provided.
Following the incident, the Pirates released a statement expressing their thoughts and prayers for the injured fan and his family. The team conducted an internal investigation, revealing that Markwood had consumed two beers during the game.
Pittsburgh Public Safety confirmed that the incident is being treated as accidental. Both teams and players expressed their concern and support for Markwood’s recovery, emphasizing the importance of fan safety and unity in the baseball community.
Pirates owner Bob Nutting also issued a statement, highlighting the deep sadness and heartbreak felt by the team and fans. He emphasized the need for solidarity and prayers for Markwood and his loved ones.
