The Knicks’ big bets are paying off, and it has them on the verge of dethroning the Celtics

At the Knicks’ media day session in September, Jalen Brunson set the tone by declaring, “Obviously, we want to take the next step. We want to be better than we were last year.” Head coach Tom Thibodeau echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the team’s constant drive for improvement.

During the offseason, team president Leon Rose made strategic moves to bolster the Knicks’ roster. These calculated risks are now paying off as the team finds itself on the cusp of advancing to the Eastern Conference finals for the first time in over two decades.

One standout player who has proven his worth in the postseason is Mikal Bridges. Despite criticism earlier in the season, Bridges has stepped up his game in crucial moments, showcasing his defensive prowess and offensive capabilities. His contributions have been instrumental in the Knicks’ recent successes.

Additionally, the decision to retain OG Anunoby has been validated as he continues to excel on both ends of the court. Anunoby’s defensive tenacity and clutch plays have been key factors in the Knicks’ playoff run.

Although faced with challenges, such as Anunoby’s brief injury scare in Game 4, the Knicks have shown resilience and determination. With key players stepping up when it matters most, the team is poised for a deep playoff run. To repeatedly face challenges without backing down, to continue battling, and then to deliver key plays in the fourth quarter, speaks volumes about him.”

The recent games also shed light on Karl-Anthony Towns, the star player acquired in a significant trade just before training camp, which was Derrick Rose’s final bold move for the season. Towns was brought in to provide a versatile offensive threat by stretching the floor with his shooting ability, but the Knicks have struggled to create opportunities for him to shoot 3-pointers. Despite this, Towns has been impactful in other ways, dominating inside and on the boards against Boston.

Towns has averaged 19.8 points and 14 rebounds per game against Boston, becoming the first Knick since Patrick Ewing in 1996 to record three consecutive 20-point, 10-rebound playoff games. Although the Celtics have targeted him defensively and he has faced challenges on the court, Towns has continued to contribute with his defensive efforts and interior play.

Teammate Jalen Brunson praised Towns for rising to the occasion and acknowledged the support from other teammates like Mikal, Josh Hart, and OG. Towns has also built chemistry with Mitchell Robinson, and their two-big lineup has proved effective in the postseason, outscoring Boston by 18 points in 38 minutes and dominating the offensive glass.

Towns commended Robinson for his impact on the game and expressed his admiration for his teammate’s contributions. Meanwhile, Brunson’s leadership and scoring prowess have been crucial for the Knicks, especially in key moments like the third quarter comeback in Game 4 against Boston.

Coach Thibodeau highlighted Brunson’s poise under pressure and his unwavering confidence in critical situations. Brunson’s ability to elevate his game against top defenders like White showcases his determination and respect for his opponents. Despite the challenges, Brunson remains fearless and focused on making an impact for his team.

As I step onto the court, I am committed to giving it my all and providing my team with the best opportunity to secure a victory. It really is as straightforward as that.

Brunson’s ability to simplify the complexities of leading a playoff game takeover is at the core of it all – the strategic moves, trades, acquisitions, and extensions over the years, every decision and shift that positioned the Knicks for this remarkable season.

His success stems from being able to perform like Kobe in the fourth quarter. He excels because he is delivering postseason performances that place him among the likes of Jordan, LeBron, and Jokić. His fourth postseason as a starter has seen him achieve more 35-point, 10-assist playoff games than anyone except LeBron, Jordan, Jerry West, and Oscar Robertson.

It works because of him – and because, as Thibodeau’s representation on the court, he never loses sight of the fact that the job is not yet complete, disrupting the postgame festivities with New York just one win away from the next stage.

“I was actually instructing everyone to leave the court,” Brunson remarked after Game 4. “I was like, ‘There’s no reason to celebrate.’ … For the longest time, every time something is accomplished, I am already thinking about what comes next. It’s a mindset I’ve had since high school, college, championships – everything I’ve won, there’s no trophy in my house. I’m always focused on ‘How can I improve?'”

Following their stellar performance in the second half – scoring 70 points on 66.7% shooting against the NBA’s 4th-ranked regular-season defense, and boasting a 148.9 offensive rating against the defending champions – the Knicks wrapped up Game 4 looking better than they have all season. They embodied the team Rose envisioned.

“We are presented with a fantastic opportunity,” Brunson expressed post-Game 4. “We are up against a formidable opponent, and I believe we have not yet showcased our best basketball. This season, with a relatively new team, we still have a long way to go to reach our full potential.”

With one more victory, they will surpass last season’s achievements set during training camp. With one more win, they will contend for a spot in the NBA Finals, as Brunson remains focused on the future, striving for a triumph worth celebrating.
