CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Take a break from your day and make sure to check the PGA Championship leaderboard right now at Quail Hollow. Surprisingly, after an eventful Thursday, the leaderboard is filled with players outside the top 10 in the world rankings.
Jhonattan Vegas, ranked 70th globally, is leading at 7-under following an impressive round of 64. Cam Davis and Ryan Gerard are trailing at -5, with five players at -4, and several others at -3. While you may recognize Donald and Vegas, the rest of the players might be unfamiliar. The beauty of golf lies in the fact that any player can have a standout day and climb to the top of the leaderboard.
According to the Elias Sports Bureau, this marks only the second time a PGA Championship has seen no top-10 players in the Official World Golf Rankings in the top 10. The highest-ranked player at Quail Hollow is Keegan Bradley at No. 19, currently tied for ninth. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is at -2, but there are many players ahead of him.
Today’s round promises intriguing and lesser-known stories, like that of Gerard, whose ties to the course and UNC drew a supportive crowd. Vegas, playing in his fourth major since 2019, surprised everyone with his exceptional performance on Thursday.
There were also moments of sheer brilliance, such as Justin Thomas’ chip-in on No. 16. Despite some early struggles, Thomas managed to finish at +2.
While favorites like McIlroy, Schauffele, DeChambeau, Spieth, and Koepka faced challenges, there is still time for a turnaround before Sunday. Thursday at the PGA Championship showcased the talents of the lesser-known players on the leaderboard.
