Wanderlei Silva’s assailant in the post-fight brawl at Spaten Fight Night 2 in Brazil has been identified.
After being disqualified in his exhibition boxing match against Acelino “Popo” Freitas due to illegal head-butt strikes, Silva found himself in the middle of a chaotic brawl involving both fighters’ entourages. The MMA legend was struck with a knockout punch by Freitas’ son, Rafael, causing him to suffer a fractured nose and necessitating hospitalization.
Silva has since been discharged from the hospital following extensive physical examinations.
Fabricio Werdum, Silva’s cornerman and former UFC heavyweight champion, confirmed on social media that it was indeed Freitas’ son who delivered the damaging blow to Silva.
“The images speak for themselves. We were vastly outnumbered in the ring when the brawl erupted, and Wanderlei was unfairly targeted. It was a despicable act to punch him from behind, resulting in a serious injury to Wanderlei’s nose. He was already fatigued from the fight and had no chance to defend himself.”
Freitas, a former WBA and WBO champion, also addressed the incident, placing blame on Silva’s team for the post-match altercation.
“It was a one-on-one fight between Wanderlei and me, but his team instigated the violence. Werdum’s involvement was cowardly and unnecessary. The entire ordeal was orchestrated by Silva’s camp, and I was unfairly targeted and attacked without cause.”
Despite Silva’s health concerns and previous surgeries, Spaten Fight Night proceeded with the match and even offered a substantial knockout bonus. The event organizers later released a statement condemning the post-match violence and emphasizing the importance of sportsmanship and respect for the rules.
Silva, still reeling from the incident, expressed his ongoing health issues and plans for further medical evaluation to assess any potential head trauma.
Overall, the aftermath of Spaten Fight Night 2 serves as a stark reminder of the need for integrity and sportsmanship in combat sports.
