Switzerland made a stunning start to the knockout stage of the UEFA 2024 European Championships by defeating the reigning champions Italy with a convincing 2-0 victory in Berlin.
The deadlock was broken in the 37th minute when Switzerland midfielder Remo Freuler found the back of the net. This was followed by another goal from Swiss midfielder Ruben Vargas early in the second half, securing Switzerland’s 2-0 lead.
This victory signifies an upset in terms of rankings, as Italy is currently ranked 10th by FIFA, while Switzerland holds the 19th position.
Both Switzerland and Italy finished as runners-up in their respective groups, with Switzerland earning five points and Italy securing four points in the group stage. Italy’s performances in the final two matches – a loss to Spain due to an own goal and a 1-1 draw with Croatia – were disappointing for the defending champions.
Italy clinched the 2020 Euros after defeating top-level teams such as Belgium, Spain, and England. Despite their success, Italy failed to qualify for the last two World Cups.
With this win, Switzerland has equaled its best Euro result, reaching the quarterfinals at Euro 2020. Switzerland will now await the winner of the upcoming match between England and Slovakia.
