New York Yankees starting infielders Gleyber Torres and DJ LeMahieu are not in the starting lineup for the series opener against the Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday night.
Torres was benched for the second game of the Subway Series due to a lack of hustle in the previous game. His struggles both at the plate and in the field have made him a liability for the majority of the season.
Meanwhile, LeMahieu has offered close to nothing at the plate since his return from the injured list. He hasn’t recorded an extra-base hit in 85 plate appearances this season while carrying a brutal .143 batting average and .452 OPS.

At second base, Jahmai Jones will take Torres’ spot while hitting sixth in the lineup. Oswaldo Cabrera is hitting eighth and playing third base for LeMahieu.

The Yankees are likely going into the trade deadline with a need to upgrade both spots, especially if neither one gets it together over the next few weeks.
