The Green Bay Packers have a unique ownership structure where the team’s owner is actually the president and CEO, a position voted on by the board of directors. With a mandatory retirement age of 70, current president and CEO Mark Murphy is set to retire in the summer of 2025.
The franchise recently voted unanimously for Ed Policy, the current COO and general counsel, to succeed Murphy. Murphy will remain in control for the next 13 months before passing the torch to Policy at the 2025 shareholders meeting.
Policy has been with the Packers since 2018 and has a background in the Arena Football League and the NFL’s league office. He is the son of Carmen Policy, a former executive of the San Francisco 49ers.
Reports suggest that Jason Wright of the Washington Commanders was also a finalist for the position. Wright, a former NFL player, has been serving as the Commanders’ team president since 2020, making history as the NFL’s first black team president.
Policy received approval from all nine members of the Packers’ board of directors, including former player Eddie Garcia.
