Tiger Woods, the legendary golfer, has recently been honored for his outstanding career achievements. He has been granted a special sponsor exemption for the PGA Tour’s Signature Events, recognizing his exceptional contribution to the sport.
This special exemption automatically qualifies Woods, a 15-time major champion and 82-time PGA Tour winner, to participate in all of the prestigious Signature Events on the PGA Tour calendar.
“An additional sponsor exemption will be created to recognize Tiger Woods in his own category as a player who has reached an exceptional lifetime achievement threshold of 80 [plus] career wins,” read the memo sent out on Tuesday.
Due to his limited participation in PGA Tour events following his car accident in 2021, Woods would not have been eligible to compete in the eight Signature Events without this special exemption. These events include prestigious tournaments such as the Sentry, AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, and Genesis Invitational.
Each of the Signature Events offers unique features like smaller fields, no cuts in five of the tournaments, FedEx Cup points, and increased prize money, making them highly coveted by players.
Despite his recent challenges, Woods remains determined to continue competing at the highest level. He is planning to participate in the upcoming Open Championship at Royal Troon Golf Course in Scotland, with his future schedule beyond that remaining uncertain.
