The NBA free agency negotiating window has been open for over 36 hours, and we’ve already witnessed big names like Paul George, Chris Paul, and Klay Thompson change teams.

Let’s assess some of the most intriguing signings in free agency, taking into account factors such as contract value, player age, expected role, and team direction.

Contract: 3 years, $50 million
Presumed role: Starter

The Mavericks identified a need for a reliable shot-maker outside of Luka Dončić and Kyrie Irving during the NBA Finals.

With Josh Green and Tim Hardaway Jr. falling short, the Mavericks made a move to acquire the services of Klay Thompson, known as one of the best shooters in NBA history.

Although Thompson may not return to his peak performance, his shooting prowess remains valuable in today’s game.

The Mavericks are banking on Thompson’s shooting abilities to remain crucial in the coming seasons, a bet that could pay off.

Contract: 2 years, $70 million
Presumed role: Star(ter)?

James Harden, despite his age and wear and tear, secured a lucrative deal with the Clippers.

While Harden’s physical decline is evident, a two-year contract allows the Clippers to maximize his contributions as a high-level starter before his decline accelerates.

Although the price tag may seem steep, the short-term nature of the deal mitigates the risk for the team.

Contract: 5 years, $90 million
Presumed role: Starter

The Bulls managed to retain their restricted free agent, Williams, at a reasonable price point.

Williams, a versatile wing/big, offers defensive prowess and three-point shooting, attributes highly valued in the league.

Paul George signed a massive contract with the Sixers, despite being 34 years old.

While the financial commitment is significant, George’s scoring ability and fit alongside Joel Embiid make him a valuable addition without sacrificing assets.

As one of the top scorers off the ball, George’s presence enhances the Sixers’ offensive capabilities.

PG Tyrese Maxey, Philadelphia 76ers

Contract: 5 years, $204 million
Presumed role: Star

Maxey’s extension with the Sixers played a pivotal role in their offseason moves.

By delaying his extension, Maxey helped the Sixers pursue other star players like George.

Maxey’s potential for improvement, coupled with his max contract, cements him as a key player for the team now and in the future.

Contract: 3 years, $87 million
Presumed role: Starter

Hartenstein’s addition provides value to the Thunder, particularly in non-Chet Holmgren minutes.

While the defensive improvement is welcomed, the team’s offensive creation remains a concern.

Despite potential drawbacks, Hartenstein’s skill set makes him a valuable asset for the team.

Contract: 3 years, $66 million
Presumed role: Starter

Caldwell-Pope’s move to Orlando signifies a significant change from his championship-winning role.
