The NWSL has chosen CPKC Stadium, the brand new home of the Kansas City Current, as the venue for the 2024 NWSL Championship, as announced here. This soccer-specific stadium, unveiled in March, is the first of its kind built specifically for a women’s professional sports team.
Kansas City is set to host the NWSL Championship, scheduled to air on CBS in primetime on Saturday, November 23 at 8 p.m., and also available for streaming on Paramount+.
CPKC Stadium, with a capacity of 11,500 fans, has been consistently sold out throughout the season, with a waiting list of 3,000 fans, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Initiated by Chris and Angie Long, along with Brittany and Patrick Mahomes, the $70-million CPKC Stadium project faced challenges with financing, as 40 banks declined to support it. However, the stadium stands as a symbol of the expanding investment and growth in women’s soccer and sports worldwide, as stated by NWSL Commissioner Jessica Berman in a league press release.
With the NWSL achieving record viewership and attendance milestones, the decision to host the league’s final at CPKC Stadium reflects the growing popularity and success of women’s sports. Despite concerns about its size compared to previous venues, the NWSL continues to experience significant growth and support.
