Spain manager Luis de la Fuente has criticized Toni Kroos for a challenge that resulted in Pedri’s injury, ruling him out of the remainder of Euro 2024.
Spain secured a 2-1 victory over Germany in the quarter-finals, setting up a semi-final clash against France next week.
However, the joy of the win was marred by Pedri’s injury, sustained from a challenge by Kroos early in the game.
Despite attempting to play through the pain, Pedri had to be substituted shortly after the incident.
The Spanish FA has confirmed that Pedri will miss the remainder of Euro 2024 due to the injury, with reports suggesting he may also miss the start of the new season with Barcelona.
De la Fuente criticized Kroos for the challenge in his post-match press conference, expressing confidence in Pedri’s ability to contribute to the team despite his absence on the field.
“I believe it warranted a red card,” De la Fuente stated. “Whether Pedri is playing or not, he will continue to make a difference. It’s crucial to utilize the entire squad in such demanding games.”
“Every player in the squad is prepared. Everyone has a role to play at the right time. I am extremely proud of these players. Tomorrow, we will focus on recovery and aim to have as many players available as possible.”
While Pedri’s tournament has come to an end, Kroos announced his retirement from professional football following Germany’s exit from Euro 2024.
The 34-year-old confirmed his decision to hang up his boots at the conclusion of Germany’s campaign, marking the end of an illustrious career.
