The clash between the top two teams in the NWSL lived up to the hype, resulting in the end of a historic regular-season unbeaten streak.
Despite playing with a player down for most of the game, the Orlando Pride secured a 2-1 victory over the KC Current, solidifying their position as the only undefeated team in the NWSL with an 11-5-0 record. This victory snapped the Current’s 17-game unbeaten streak dating back to September 30, 2023.
The Pride, now on a 17-game unbeaten streak of their own, showcased their dominance in the league.
The match saw goals from the top two goal scorers in the league, with Barbra Banda of the Pride opening the scoring in the 37th minute.
The Current’s Temwa Chawinga quickly responded with a stunning breakaway goal just two minutes later.
Despite a red card reducing the Pride to 10 players and star player Marta briefly sustaining a leg injury, the team managed to secure the win with a penalty kick from Marta in the second half.
Although the Current had more shots and shots on goal, the Pride goalkeeper Anna Moorhouse’s outstanding performance kept all but one of them out of the net.
With this victory, the Pride sit at the top of the NWSL standings with 38 points, holding a three-point lead over the Current and the Washington Spirit following closely with 34 points. The Pride will have the opportunity to surpass the Current’s unbeaten streak when they face the Houston Dash after the Olympic break.
