Andy Murray will not have the opportunity for one final sendoff at Wimbledon this year. Originally scheduled to compete in a mixed doubles match on Saturday, Murray found himself without a partner after Emma Raducanu withdrew due to a sore wrist. The pair were set to face off against Zhang Shuai and Marcelo Arevalo as the final match on Court No. 1, but with the brackets already set, Murray was unable to find a replacement partner.
Raducanu explained her decision to withdraw, stating, “Unfortunately, I woke up with some stiffness in my right wrist this morning. So therefore I have decided to make the very tough decision to withdraw from the mixed doubles tonight.” Raducanu will instead focus on her upcoming fourth-round singles match against New Zealand’s Lulu Sun.
Although Murray will not receive a final farewell from the Wimbledon crowd, he was already bid a warm goodbye by his fellow Brits at Centre Court on Thursday, along with a tribute video, following his defeat in a men’s doubles match with brother Jamie. This marked his last match at the prestigious London venue.
Murray, a two-time Wimbledon champion, has faced numerous injuries throughout his career, including back surgery and hip procedures. Despite his recent spinal cyst surgery and announcement of retirement plans after the Paris Olympics, longtime rival Novak Djokovic expressed doubt about Murray’s finality, stating, “I wouldn’t be surprised if he decides to come back again. He’s an incredible competitor. Resilience that you can definitely study and teach young athletes.”
