The Chicago Bears are gearing up for training camp with their rookies set to report on Tuesday, July 16th. However, there is some concern as their two top draft picks have yet to sign a contract. While some on social media are worried, I believe it’s not a cause for alarm just yet. The real deadline is July 16th, and if the contracts are not signed by then, it could become a significant issue.
It’s worth noting that Caleb Williams has not hired an agent to represent him, at least not officially. He has the option to negotiate the contract himself, but his father or attorney cannot partake in the negotiations as they are not certified by the Players Association.
The situation takes an interesting turn as reports suggest that Williams’ camp may have enlisted the services of Tony Agnone from EAS Football in Maryland as an “advisor” during the Scouting Combine in February. While this has not been confirmed, many in the agent community believe it to be true.
If Agnone does end up negotiating Williams’ contract, it is expected to be a smooth process given that rookie contracts are predetermined as part of the NFL’s Collective Bargaining Agreement. Agnone, with over 40 years of experience, is known for his fair dealings and successful contract negotiations, having represented Hall of Famer Michael Strahan in the past.
Once the contract is finalized, it is anticipated to surpass last year’s top pick Bryce Young’s deal in Carolina, which amounted to $37,955,074.00 over four years with all guaranteed. This year’s second pick, Jayden Daniels, has already signed a $37.75 million contract, setting the bar for Williams’ expected contract in the $39.5 million range.
In the case of Odunze, his agents at Excel Sports Management have already negotiated contracts for other draft picks like Drake Maye and Troy Fautanu. Maye, drafted third, and Fautanu, drafted twentieth, have their deals in place.
While some picks have already signed their contracts, like number eight pick Michael Penix, others, including number eleven pick J.J. McCarthy, are yet to finalize their deals. Speculation suggests that the Bears’ appearance on Hard Knocks this summer may add a bit of drama to the contract negotiations.
Despite the ongoing negotiations, there is no need for concern as both players are eager to join the Bears and understand their value to the team. The deals are expected to be completed within the next week, especially with the front office staff returning from vacation to focus on finalizing contracts ahead of training camp.
As the countdown to training camp begins, fans can expect the contract negotiations to be wrapped up soon. The excitement is building as the rookies prepare to hit the field and make their mark on the Chicago Bears organization.
