Tiger Woods once again fell short in his latest major championship appearance, posting a 3-over 73 on Friday at the U.S. Open. This score dropped him to 7-over for the week, well outside the projected cut line at Pinehurst No. 2.
Struggling to find consistency, Woods has now missed the cut or withdrawn from six of the last eight major championships. Despite battling injuries and off-course issues, Woods showed improvement physically on Friday. However, he couldn’t make up for his rough start on Thursday, where he carded a 4-over 74 with six bogeys.
Although Woods started strong with a birdie on his first four holes on Friday, he missed key birdie opportunities down the stretch that could have saved his round. A missed birdie putt at the 13th and a lip-out at the 15th added to his frustration. His game further unraveled at the 16th, where a wayward drive led to his fourth bogey of the day.
Following his disappointing performance, Woods confirmed his participation in the British Open next month but remained uncertain about his future schedule. Expressing his frustration, Woods acknowledged the importance of making the cut to contend for a title.
Other notables who missed the cut
Dustin Johnson struggled to a 9-over finish, while Justin Thomas and Phil Mickelson also failed to make the weekend. Several other notable names, including Max Homa, Viktor Hovland, and Rickie Fowler, also missed the cut at the U.S. Open.
