Red Sox starter reflects on journey after All-Star selection

Boston Red Sox pitcher Tanner Houck has been having an outstanding season so far, with a 2.68 ERA (seventh best in MLB) and a 1.05 WHIP (16th), along with 106 strikeouts (tied for 23rd).

His selection to the All-Star team this past weekend is truly remarkable, especially considering where he was just a few years ago and the doubts surrounding him before this season.

Reflecting on his journey in baseball, the 28-year-old shared his thoughts on what it took to reach this point.

“The biggest lesson I’ve learned is the importance of hard work and perseverance, no matter how many times you face challenges or setbacks,” Houck expressed. “It’s not always easy or fun to keep pushing forward after failures, but it’s the right way to approach things. Putting in the effort every day and striving for improvement, even by just one percent, is what truly matters. It’s about finding hope during tough times and showing your true character.”

Houck has faced adversity, moving between the bullpen and rotation and dealing with a facial injury last season from a line drive.

Despite his personal achievement, the typically stoic pitcher expressed his gratitude towards his teammates and coaches.

“I am incredibly thankful for the amazing coaching staff and the supportive team in the locker room,” Houck acknowledged. “It’s an honor to show up to the field every day. Players like Duran and Devers and everyone in that locker room inspire me to give my all on the field. I feel blessed and grateful for this moment.”
