British Open: R&A offering record $17 million purse at Royal Troon, $3.1 million for Claret Jug winner

The British Open is set to offer a record purse this year for the champion who claims the Claret Jug on Sunday afternoon. Despite this increase, the total prize money of $17 million is still lower than what the other three major championships provide. The R&A announced that the winner of this year’s tournament at Royal Troon will receive $3.1 million, with the second and third-place finishers earning $1.76 million and over $1 million, respectively.

While the British Open’s purse is a historic high, it falls short compared to the prize money offered at other major golf events and PGA Tour tournaments. R&A CEO Martin Slumbers explained that this decision aims to strike a balance between escalating prize funds and fostering the growth of golf globally.

The Players Championship currently boasts the largest purse at $25 million, with other major championships like the U.S. Open, Masters, and PGA Championship offering substantial prize money as well. Despite this, Slumbers emphasized the importance of ensuring the sport’s long-term financial sustainability and global development.

Leading golfers are gearing up for the British Open at Royal Troon, with Scottie Scheffler favored to win the tournament. The event will commence on Thursday, marking the return of the championship to the iconic course in Scotland. As the excitement builds, golf enthusiasts eagerly anticipate witnessing top players compete for the prestigious Claret Jug.
