Tom Aspinall vs Ciryl Gane: The Battle of Heavyweights
Tom Aspinall is not backing down from Ciryl Gane’s challenges.
The rivalry between these two UFC heavyweights has been brewing for years, reaching a boiling point when Aspinall claimed that Gane turned down the opportunity to fight for his interim heavyweight title in UFC 304 to pursue a movie role. Gane quickly responded to Aspinall’s accusations.
During a recent Twitch stream, Gane addressed the situation captured by French outlet La Sueur, stating, “He only accepts my fights when I cannot. He likes to say that I refuse him, but the truth is that I have already called him out on social media. Now that he is ranked above me, he chooses to decline. No problem, we will meet soon.”
Aspinall, on the other hand, is gearing up to defend his interim title against Curtis Blaydes in UFC 304’s co-main event. When questioned about Gane’s comments on The MMA Hour, Aspinall fired back.
Aspinall responded to Gane’s claims, stating, “I don’t think that’s very accurate. The UFC wanted me to fight Gane, but he declined. If he chooses to focus on his acting career, I respect that. My goal is to fight and prove myself in the cage, not pursue other interests.”
Ranked as MMA Fighting’s No. 1 heavyweight and No. 12 pound-for-pound fighter, Aspinall has a record of 7-1 in the UFC, with impressive wins over ranked opponents. His only loss came in a brief encounter with Blaydes due to a knee injury.
Accusing Gane of avoiding top contenders, Aspinall stated, “He’s dismissed me on multiple occasions, not just me but other fighters too. I’m here to fight anyone, anytime.”
Gane is scheduled to face Alexander Volkov in a rematch at UFC 308, while Aspinall remains focused on his upcoming bout with Blaydes, leaving behind any distractions caused by Gane.
Aspinall emphasized his commitment to fighting, saying, “I want to step into the arena, face my opponent, and let the best man win. That’s what drives me, not other pursuits like movies or parties. If Gane decides to fight in the future, I’ll be ready.”
statement: “The team won the championship because they worked hard and never gave up.”
