The Dominican Republic prosecutors announced on Tuesday that Rays shortstop Wander Franco has been formally charged with sexual abuse and sexual exploitation against a minor.
An investigation into Franco, 23, began on July 10, 2023, after a complaint was filed alleging that he engaged in a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old girl.
MLB placed Franco on administrative leave in August 2023 following rumors on social media about his alleged relationship with a teenage girl.
Prosecutor Kelmin Duncan and spokesperson Nairobi Viloria confirmed the formal accusation against Franco on Tuesday, after the deadline expired.
Here’s the latest update on Franco’s legal case and his future status.
Understanding Wander Franco’s sexual abuse charges
Franco last played in MLB on Aug. 12, one day before rumors surfaced about his alleged involvement in inappropriate behavior.
He denied the accusations on social media, stating that people were spreading false information.
When Franco didn’t play on Aug. 13, manager Kevin Cash mentioned giving him a rest day without elaborating on the situation.
On Aug. 14, it was reported that a minor had filed a complaint against Franco, leading to his placement on administrative leave by MLB.
In January, Dominican prosecutors accused Franco of commercial sexual exploitation and money laundering, later reducing the charges to sexual and psychological abuse.
MLB extended Franco’s administrative leave while investigations continue, with Franco remaining in the Dominican Republic.
Despite the allegations, Franco signed a lucrative contract with the Rays in 2021.
