Ravindra Jadeja has recently been left out of India’s upcoming three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka, sparking speculation that he may have been dropped rather than rested when the squad was announced.
The seasoned all-rounder played a key role for Team India in the 50-over format during the ODI World Cup 2023, where he took 16 wickets and was one of the standout performers despite India’s loss to Australia in the final.
Jadeja’s future in limited-overs cricket has been in question for some time, especially after his lackluster performances at the T20 World Cup 2024, which led to his retirement from T20Is. Following India’s victory in the tournament, he also announced his retirement from T20s.
Recent reports suggest that Jadeja’s ODI career may be coming to an end as India ushers in a new era under head coach Gautam Gambhir.
Has Ravindra Jadeja’s ODI career come to a close?
According to Hindustan Times, Jadeja’s ODI career could be over, with Axar Patel and Washington Sundar poised to take his place in the team.
A BCCI source told HT that with only six ODIs, including the Sri Lanka series, before the next Champions Trophy, selectors are looking to give more opportunities to Patel and Sundar.
Axar’s impressive performances at the T20 World Cup 2024 have solidified his position in the team, leading to Jadeja being sidelined. The BCCI is reportedly exploring options beyond Jadeja for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
“There’s nothing wrong with Jadeja’s performance. The management just wants to look at other options as we have to build a team for the future,” the source added.
