Which MLB players will be the X-factors in the second half of the season?

As the playoff races heat up post-All-Star break, six writers (three from MLB.com and three from Yahoo Sports) have identified players with the potential to make a significant impact in the final stretch of the 2024 season. These players have the opportunity not only to perform well individually but also to help push their teams towards a postseason berth or a division title.

Here are six players to watch as they aim to make a difference with their performances in the coming months. (Stats are up to date as of Monday’s games.)

The Mariners, initially with a 10-game lead in the AL West, are now in a tight race with the Astros for the division title. With a struggling offense, Seattle may look to bolster their lineup at the trade deadline. However, a strong finish from J-Rod could prove to be just as impactful as any trade.

Rodríguez, despite a slow start to the season, has shown glimpses of his potential. If he can recapture his form from last year, he could provide the offensive boost the Mariners need to clinch their first AL West title since 2001.

With the White Sox possibly looking to trade Crochet, the 25-year-old lefty could be a game-changer for any contending team. Despite concerns about his workload, Crochet has been dominant this season and could be a key addition for a team eyeing a playoff run.

Whichever team lands Crochet will gain a top-tier pitcher who could make a significant impact in the postseason.

When healthy, Lewis is a standout player with the potential to make a difference for the Twins in their push for a playoff spot. If he can stay on the field, Lewis could provide the spark Minnesota needs to secure a postseason berth.

A healthy Lewis could be the key to a successful second half for the Twins as they aim to close the gap in the AL wild-card race.

— Brent Maguire (MLB.com)

Glasnow’s return from injury will be crucial for the Dodgers, who have questions in their starting rotation. His performance in the second half will be vital for Los Angeles to contend in the postseason.

Glasnow’s ability to stay healthy and deliver strong outings will be instrumental for the Dodgers as they look towards October.

— Russ Dorsey (Yahoo Sports)

Senga’s arrival for the Mets could be a game-changer as they push for a playoff spot. With his Cy Young-caliber talent, Senga has the potential to make a significant impact for New York down the stretch.

A healthy Senga could be the difference-maker for the Mets in their quest for a postseason berth.

— David Adler (MLB.com)

Machado’s recent resurgence could be key for the Padres as they aim for a return to the postseason. If he can maintain his current form, Machado could play a crucial role in San Diego’s postseason aspirations.

Machado’s performance in the final stretch will be essential for the Padres as they look to secure a spot in the NL postseason race.
