2024 British Open: Tiger Woods should play as long as he wants

Tiger Woods is unlikely to win the 2024 British Open or any other major tournament for that matter. Despite his struggles on the PGA Tour, he should continue playing as long as he wants to. His recent performance at the British Open showcased his decline from his prime years, with a disappointing finish far down the leaderboard.

The numbers tell a grim story for Woods, with recent poor finishes at major tournaments. However, Woods remains determined to improve and hopes for better results in the future. While watching Woods play in 2024 may be uncomfortable, he deserves the right to continue competing as long as he chooses.

Despite calls for Woods to retire, he has the final say in his career. As a past champion, he is exempt from certain age restrictions, unlike others who have criticized him. Woods revolutionized the game of golf and should be allowed to play as long as he pleases. The galleries surrounding him continue to show their support, capturing every moment of his rounds with their cellphones and cheering him on through every shot.

They’ll shout his name — “TOY-GAH,” as they say at Royal Troon — and they’ll continue to show their support, regardless of how he struggles on a hole, a round, or a course.

On a late Thursday afternoon, as Woods made his way up the 18th hole towards the clubhouse, the spectators lining the fairway stood up in unison to applaud Woods once more. While everyone may be rooting for the Woods of the past rather than the present, it doesn’t matter. Love is love, and for every fan who has turned away from Woods due to his on-course language or off-course actions, there are still many who want to witness a legend in action.

So if you’re considering watching Woods play in person — maybe at the PGA Championship in Charlotte next year, or the U.S. Open in Pittsburgh — go for it. He’s easy to spot on the course; just follow the cheers.

But just in case, don’t wait until the weekend.
