If manners are worth anything, Tom Aspinall should have his wish granted. The UFC interim heavyweight champion put on a show in the UFC 304 co-main event, defeating Curtis Blaydes in just 60 seconds, and then set his sights on the division’s current champion, Jon Jones.
“Hello Jon,” Aspinall addressed the camera after his victory over Blaydes. “I have nothing personal against you, but I believe I’m superior to you. I am confident that I can defeat you in a fight, so I am coming for you.”
This declaration was met with cheers from the crowd at Co-op Live in Manchester, England, as well as agreement from many MMA fans, media, and fighters online who expressed their eagerness to see Aspinall face Jones.
It is a logical progression. Aspinall holds the interim title, while Jones holds the actual championship. The idea of Aspinall defending the interim title against Blaydes while Jones fights Stipe Miocic seemed illogical from the start. Continuing with the Jones vs. Miocic plan now would be absurd.
Not only because missed opportunities can vanish quickly in the fight business, as evidenced by the failed negotiations for Jones vs. Francis Ngannou, but also because not giving Aspinall the chance to fight Jones would be a disservice. Aspinall has proven himself by defeating other top heavyweights, and unifying the titles is the next logical step.
Aspinall has done everything asked of him. He has defeated all contenders, dispatched them swiftly, and now he has made his intentions clear. Denying him the opportunity to fight Jones in favor of a Miocic matchup would be a waste of his potential.
Here are a few other highlights from UFC 304:
– Belal Muhammad’s victory is a triumph worth celebrating. Despite facing doubt and criticism, Muhammad proved his worth by defeating Leon Edwards to become the new UFC welterweight champion. His performance in the main event showcased his determination and skill, silencing those who underestimated him.
Belal Muhammad’s journey has been challenging, with the sport often overlooking his talent. However, his victory over Edwards in enemy territory proves his worth and demands respect.
– The unexpected strategies of King Green and Paddy Pimblett. Green’s decision to go for a takedown played right into Pimblett’s strengths, resulting in an unexpected win for “The Baddy.” Despite perceived skill gaps, Pimblett continues to defy expectations and secure victories.
– Farewell to Muhammad Mokaev. Mokaev’s controversial actions during fight week and underwhelming performance in the cage have led to the decision not to re-sign him with the UFC. His antics may find an audience elsewhere, but he will need to deliver more compelling performances to earn respect.
