Every aspect of this year’s Olympic opening ceremony was infused with a sense of global unity.
The festivities on Friday, intended to honor Paris and France, did just that. However, they also showcased a diverse array of international stars from both the sports world and beyond, who were given prominent roles.
Performers like Lady Gaga, Celine Dion, and Shaheem Sanchez, who hail from outside of France, took center stage. Additionally, renowned figures such as Spain’s Rafael Nadal, Romania’s Nadia Comaneci, and America’s Serena Williams and Carl Lewis were entrusted with the symbolic task of carrying the Olympic torch across the Seine river.

The decision to include these international icons in the torch ceremony was unconventional, as such ceremonies typically highlight the host country’s athletes. Many of the French athletes who participated have diverse backgrounds, like Zinedine Zidane, whose family emigrated from Algeria.
Despite this, the connection between these international stars and France was emphasized during the ceremony. Nadal’s dominance at the French Open, Williams’ victories, Comaneci’s historic achievements in gymnastics, and Lewis’ track record all contributed to their involvement in the event.
Nadal’s success on French soil, Williams’ French Open titles, and Comaneci’s gymnastic feats justified their roles in the ceremony. Lewis, although less connected to France, was included due to his legendary status in track and field.
