Coco Gauff faced a tough defeat in the third round of the Olympics against Donna Vekić of Croatia. Despite taking responsibility for her loss, Gauff expressed frustration with the chair umpire and called for increased video replay in tennis.
The match took a contentious turn when a disputed call by the chair umpire resulted in a crucial point and service break for Vekić. This decision led to a heated argument between Gauff and the umpire, causing a delay in the match.
Reflecting on the incident, Gauff stated, “I felt that he called it before I hit, and I don’t think the ref disagreed. I think he just thought it didn’t affect my swing, which I felt like it did.”
Despite the outcome, Gauff acknowledged that the disputed point may not have changed the final result. This incident is not the first time she has experienced such challenges in officiating during matches.
Looking ahead, Gauff remains optimistic as she continues to compete in mixed doubles with Taylor Fritz and women’s doubles with Jessica Pegula. With her sights set on winning gold in these events, Gauff is determined to make a strong comeback after her singles elimination.
